How to Care for and Clean Your Jewelry at Home
Proper jewelry care can extend the life and beauty of your precious pieces for generations. Whether you own gold, silver, diamond, or gemstone jewelry, a little regular maintenance goes a long way in keeping them looking brand new.
Cleaning Gold Jewelry
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm (not hot) water. Soak your gold jewelry for 15–20 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft toothbrush, paying attention to settings and crevices. Rinse thoroughly under warm water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid using toothpaste or baking soda, as these can scratch gold surfaces.
Cleaning Silver Jewelry
Silver tarnishes over time due to exposure to air and moisture. Use a silver polishing cloth or a paste of baking soda and water to gently rub away tarnish. For intricate pieces, a silver dip solution works well. Store silver jewelry in anti-tarnish pouches or zip-lock bags to slow down tarnishing.
Cleaning Diamond Jewelry
Diamonds attract oils and lotions, which can dull their sparkle. Use the same warm soapy water method as gold. An ultrasonic cleaner (available at most jewelry stores) can also be used for diamonds. Avoid using chlorine bleach as it can damage the metal settings.
General Care Tips
- Remove jewelry before swimming, exercising, or applying perfume and lotions.
- Store each piece separately to avoid scratches — use a lined jewelry box with individual compartments.
- Take your jewelry for a professional cleaning and inspection once a year to check for loose stones or worn prongs.
- Avoid exposing jewelry to extreme heat or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
